You train like shit for the first year or two so that doesn't count for much. The next few years you're training like everyone tells you to and you make good gains. After long enough you experiment and realize you've been leaving a lot on the table and your physique improves a lot because you start optimizing your program for you in particular

It took me about 6 years to get where I wanted to be and do a maintence routine. I sort of fill the vacuum it left with cardio, athletic training and outdoor hobbies.
