Trader Joes and Whole Foods are more expensive. There is a lot of data showing that more affluent people have lower rates of obesity.

Costco is great but I can't stand going there. Always really busy and people don't know how to navigate at all. Plus airheaded Chinese and Indians everywhere. Try to limit my trips to once a month at most.

The Costcos near me are all in somewhat upper middle class areas near some of the fortune 500 offices so my assumption is that they're all H1B immigrants that work nearby.

I also think it's some novel participation in American culture and society, the scale of Costco is probably mind blowing to jeets and changs. Perfect representation of their primary interest in America as an economic/consumption zone. Don't have the taste or self awareness to go to organic/yuppy grocery stores like wealthy shitlibs.

I grew up in brooklyn and the costco there is in sunset park which is a heavily chinese area so there's a lot of asian specialty products like big bags of dried mushrooms or dried sea cucumbers
they also seem to LOVE buying 50lb bags of white rice and giant containers of peanut oil, so they're probably buying their restaurant supplies there

Bro tell me about it. 50 people in my giant eagle grocery store and i have to dodge many cart collisions of old lifeless boomers. Meanwhile at tiny Trader Joes that place can be packed to the gills and it functions as normal

Man even 5 years ago this was not the case. I think with inflation, a less affluent segment of the population started using Costco regularly for groceries. I remember telling my wife I liked it because it there was so much room to get through the aisles. Now it's not the same anymore. I bet they have crowded the aisles with displays a little bit more, too, now that I'm thinking about it.

Junkfood has more hidden sugars and sneed oils, which cause obesity. These places sell less horrible versions of junkfood, so the people who frequent it are marginally less unhealthy.

      Is Sam’s any better?

I've been a member of both Sam's and Costco. For a little while both. Right now I just have Sam's. First off no question that Costco has products that are higher in quality, such as their Kirkland brand. If you are a gourmet cook and buy $60 pieces of fish and $80 steaks go to costco. Though they both carry a lot of the same general products. Overall my biggest reason for liking Sam's is a larger variety of products. Dumb example I was a costco member for like 5 years. All that time they never had pizza rolls. Sam's always has them. Plenty of examples like that. So especially if you are a single shopper like me Sam's is better. They also have the app where you can scan your products and avoid the check out line. Costco expect to add at least 15 minutes minimum to every trip vs Sam's. Sometimes a lot longer.

Not really. It's not a fitness specialty store. And their meat and produce is usually not up to par with competitors.

That said, everything else surpasses their competitors with higher quality at better prices. I wrote a whole paper in college about their business model and it's pretty cool and unique which allows them to do this. They do a lot of things like keeping employees well compensated and happy with good benefits and working environment, but in terms of the bottom line they can do this because they keep their locations small. They can keep their locations small because they stock their own brand on their shelves and not competitors brands. Fewer items = less space required. They ensure their brand is up to quality so there are no complaints which leaves the consumer satisfied with only having trader joes brand peanut butter in smooth or crunchy, traditional or organic, instead of the 100 different brands and varieties of just peanut butter you have to stock in a regular grocery store as an example. And since it's their own private label, they've cut out the middleman taking that extra cut, and those savings get passed on to you. There's more of course but that's the jist of it

No it is not. Trader Joe's is its own thing it was BOUGHT by Aldi Nord, not founded. This is different from Aldi Sud, which owns the Aldi you're thinking of. Two different companies.

      Yes it does.

Pretty obvious. Upper middle class people think Walmart is the devil. Higher iq and earnings are correlated with a lower bmi. Obviously not true in every case but there is still a relationship. Wouldn’t call them fit though, unless you mean in an endurance activity cycling mountain biking hiking yoga type of way. That is my social circle and honestly it’s pretty fricking annoying when they’re democrats. They preach about all this left wing equality shit but when it comes to their actual lives they won’t go to Walmart because they are deeply classist and superficial underneath the bullshit veneer they maintain purely for status.

Walmart is a general store but also cheap. You'll find a higher population of poor obese people there than other places.

Kroger is more family oriented. Older people tend to get fatter. Especially with kids.

Trader Joe's is pretty unique but if it had a clientele it would be yuppies. Young urban professionals probably hitting the gym and single trying to attract mates. They also have a somewhat health conscious base as part of their marketing is no artificial ingredients, additives, and no GMOs.

Whole Foods used to be for the hip, the hippie/eco types before it became a part of Amazon. Some of those types still shop there but now it's just a really expensive overpriced grocer that happens to sell all the niche and organic stuff you'd have difficulty getting elsewhere. Their customers also tend to be more health conscious but now it's mostly for upper class white people, who again tend to be not as obese.

They do sell soda. They have their own private label soda brands. Whole foods has typical flavors like lemon lime and cola and stuff. Trader joes doesn't have this but they sell like pomegranate rhubarb soda or something, and ginger beer.

You're right, forgot about that. It doesn't get bought very often. I've never tried it, but I'm guessing the taste is off, like most house-brand sodas, which probably drives the fatty soda addicts away.

It's a great place, but their supplements are overpriced and watered-down (although pure). You're better off ordering supplements from manufacturers instead of shopping there.

They also have lots of things I can't get at regular stores that's worth visiting for, but their normal groceries are a joke and way overpriced.
