Calves depends on the insertions + training.
They're the forearm of the legs, so that's why most people(especially lanklets) cope with"muh genetics".

Biceps dont depend on insertions + training? Biceps are just as genetic. Some people have crazy peak, some dont. Its literally muscle insertions.

The answer that people dont want to hear is training volume. For biceps people do 15 isolation sets + indirect back work another 15 sets probably so your biceps get worked like ~30 working sets per week. What do people do with calves? Maybe one exercise of 3 sets during their leg day. So maybe 3-6 sets per week?

Its literally that simple. NOBODY does 2-3 exercises per workout for calves 2-3x a week. Absolutely nobody. Then they come with a surprised pikachu face when they didnt develop their calves as much doing 3 sets of volume per week compared to 15-30 sets for other muscle group which grew like a weed.

You can build bigger calves but like said nobody wants to put in the work to make them grow

My advice is to train them hard on a bulk + always do 20 minutes on the stair climber at the end of workouts. They will grow. Then you'll see the muscle when you cut, just as you would with chest

Thing is, once they're built they don't require much effort for upkeep. Just by going about your life you'll be doing enough to maintain them. Building them is the hard part but once you've done that they'll stay big forever, maintaining them is a cakewalk

        Yeah that's what I said.
You either have long or short insertions.

Biceps are also down to genetics. The muscle belly length of all muscles determines potential size.

All muscle size depends on insertions and training. The big difference between the biceps and calves is that the calf muscles are mostly type 1 (often as much as 90%) and 2a fibers (slow and intermediate contraction speed). Type 1 doesn't like to grow very much and type 2a will still not grow as much. So growth is really slow if you get it at all. This is why calf size is more genetic compared to the biceps. You have to train a lot for very little compared to other muscle groups. Whereas the biceps (an many other upper body muscles) usually have a lot more 2b and larger hybrid fibers which like to grow a lot. All you really have to do is train them hard and you'll see lot of biceps growth.
        >insertions
Are genetic. Muscle fiber composition on the individual level is often genetic as well.

100%. I got genetically fricked with short bicep insertions, I can fit 4 fingers between my bicep and inner elbow when held at a 90 degree angle.

that's bad. I've grown my biceps a lot but it's only obvious when my arm is bent. Otherwise I look DYEL when they're straight. No amount of natty work will ever fix that.

        Just gotta accept and compensate.

Gymcels think that way because they do one set of the sloppiest calf raises possible at the end of their leg days, don't get any growth, then go "damn, I guess I have le bad calf genetics"

      >insertions + training
This, calves grow a lot from running(proper) and sprints, gym rats only do some isolation exercises for them every now and then and ponder why it wont work out. Check out soccer players, not even the top professional ones, just any local that has been into it for a few years since teenager.

        >blacks what, like Black folk?
He means that blacks tend to have a longer achilles tendon which makes them more explosive but makes the calves themselves smaller.

Forearms should grow if you do deadlifts, weighted pull ups, rows etc without straps, or at least not using straps until your forearms get tired.
You can get good calves as well, its just that its demoralizing as frick to see someone with big calves, or big forearms that hasnt even trained them, so most people skip them entirely. Imagine seeing a guy that doesnt work out with fairly lean 20 inch arms and 30 inch legs, it would be the same shit.

These are only good after doing any flexion motion first, like wrist rollers, wrist curls, frick even ez curls with an wirst curl at the top would be better to tire them out and then doing holds.

Calves, Forearms, Abs, maybe even shoulders, need high volume, high reps AND high weight. 3x a week if they are slacking. I did the same with traps too (and had to slow down because I didnt want them to get too huge).

Luckily for me, my calves are jacked from biking, walking high incline on the treadmill and playing basketball about 6 hours a day since 7th grade, so I don't need to go insane, or even train them with lifting. I do once in a while, just for knee support and relieve tightness for the patella.

Both are. But biceps you can built, calves are basically impossible to built even if you squat 500 lbs+.
I train legs with the same intensity as every other body part and quats over 4pl8s for reps, yet everyone calls me a club pumper because my calves look like I never trained legs in my life despite squats being literally my strongest lift.

  19. 2 weeks ago

    It's mostly 3 reasons.

Reason 1: Calf insertions can make or break your calf aesthetics. Too short and you look like a 40 year old dad. Too high and you look like you have chicken legs. Someone like CBUM has perfect calf insertions, not too high not too low.

Reason 2: misconception. Most people do 10+ hard sets a week for their biceps + whatever pulling compounds they're doing, meanwhile for their calves they only do 3 sets at RPE 5 at the end of leg days which they rarely stay consistent with.

  20. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

They're not, just get fat for 20 years and walk a lot a certain way and you should get bigger calves.
The downside is that your glutes will atrophy and your knees will bow.

  21. 2 weeks ago

Calves are tough and need costant work but most gymcels are sedentary as frick.

  22. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Biceps can be tough to build. Look at the top guys who have struggled- bumstead, grimes. Even Dorian Yates biceps were a relative weak point. My calves have never been good but improving my core mechanics and mind muscle connection to my core has actually helped me build bigger calves. The natural tendency is to shift all the weight to the inner calves and sort of let your weight collapse in instead of keeping it evenly distributed to the outside of the calf

  23. 2 weeks ago

Calves aren’t just down to genetics.
The problem is that people don’t train them like other muscles.
You wouldn’t do 4-8 sets for triceps for the week and call it good, would you? So why would you think calves would grow from only 4-8 sets per week.
