Imagine if they segregated planes based on BMI, so that if you were overweight / obese you were booked for a flight that only transported other fat people too.

I simply don't believe this headline. I'm guessing it's something like if there's an open seat they'll give it to fatty free of charge. But I don't believe they're going to let you say "I'm a fatty" and book 2 seats for the price of one.

I remember in 2009 when Ryanair tried to charge fat passengers extra per kilogram (which they would weigh people to measure), which made a lot of sense just like you would charge extra for more luggage weight/space. But the fat lobby is very powerful.

because it's good business. It's the same reason they call for people to be voluntarily bumped with varying compensation. because they can offer you a fraction of the 400% reimbursement they're supposed to give if they involuntarily bump you.
In this case it's the same. by telling fatty to book 2 seats they avoid an involuntary bump of either person. They also get to count it as a loss every time they do it even though it's only a real loss in the case where every other seat checks in.
the fat person might even neglect to claim reimbursement. Overall it's a really good idea and I bet all airlines will go to this in 3-4 years
