Fricking moron, sardines have negligible levels of mercury. They're near the bottom of the marine food chain. The marine life with high levels of mercury are big predatory fish like albacore tuna, shark and swordfish. Sardines do have some arsenic but even that will be negligible if you're only eating 1 can per day.

Pretty sure the best protein $/g I can find is costco albacore cans
$13 for a pack of 8, each one has 42g of protein, so that's $0.04/g
Also the costco whey is decent as well

Sardines aren't that bad afaik, but still most sea fish are full of mercury these days and there are actually cases of serious mercury poisoning from eat too much fish.
So honestly I'd limit it just to be safe because mercury can give you bad neurological issues.
