I remember reading once that increasing telomere length /didn't/ actually produce a corresponding increase in longevity in presumably an animal model; that the length is a marker of biological age, but unfortunately not a means to modulate it; an effect, rather than a cause

they hypothesise that the telomeres deplete - at least in part - to prevent that kind of rapid, uncontrolled growth
so we could make our telomeres longer right now, with those same methods, but we'd get horrible cancers
