Don't be disindigenous. Often I feel like I'm operating at the perimeter of my parameters. Like definitely 90% of max heart rate. I take a look at my watch and see I'm at 74% and that I'm just being a b***h.
It paces you to push yourself harder, and to exercise more. It's 11 PM and I've logged 52 exercise minutes today. Can't have that on me - I'll go for a quick jog before hitting the sack and get those last eight minutes.

I use an activity tracker when I run (and didn't forget to charge it), but find that I focus too much on my heart beat and shit and it psyches me out. I run better with just a normal watch on stopwatch mode.

Look, I get it. And I guess I wrote that too hastily. If you're training super intensely and want very good data, your autist brains will fall in love with smart watches. Like I said I have a Garmin Vivosmart V4, and it's pretty dope. Tells you your VO2max and shit and resting HR and so on. Fun shit. But if you hung up your autist hat and lift/run for general health and less for specific goals and shit, then they're a meme.
The only metrics I use now are the mirror, my weight, and how I feel (just chilling but also while exercising). You really learn how your body reacts to stuff you don't need a watch.
Also, I forgot which one of you dudes said it, but it's not anxiety or some shit. It's that I'm too moronic to run with a watch and not shoot myself in the foot. Like early in a run I run hard because I'm fresh and the watch is telling me I got some BPM left in the tank so I go full send, but even though my heart can endure my legs take a beating and halfway my performance tanks and I don't finish as strong. Whereas watch free I don't get distracted/triggered by the BPM and focus on the run and maintain a stronger performance overall. That's not the watche's fault, I know that's me being a moron, but it's stronger than me.

I have a samsung active 2. I like it. It's fun to track heart rate vs cadence, elevation, and speed of my runs. It's also a good way to ahow progress over time in both time and heart rate progression. I definitely work out more and go to bed on time just so I can see the numbers on the watch
I also find myself following the mindless prompts to stand up and move around when I'm working. I do it just so the schlubby guy on my watch tells me I'm doing good.

Bro, i had that watch for a year and it was a nice watch, the best one i had until i got the galaxy watch 4. The 4 is fricking awesome, it does everything the active 2 does but wait, theres more, it tracks your body composition, blood oxygen and a few things else.
Ive given up on fitness from time to time because of different reasons, but i always come back while checking my shit with a watch or an activity band. It makes you feel good to see you accomplished something, and thats important when you look on the mirror or on the scale and you dont see any progress or you go backwards. The watch keeps you motivated because you have a "receipt" that you actually did something, after a month you can check how much progress did you make and oh man, that feeling is awesome, then you pay attention to the mirror and holy shit.

If you would like a luxury watch, go for it. Rolex is generally regarded as a decent entry point. It does carry brand baggage, but very few people are going to understand why someone buys a Patek Phillipe for example.

I got myself a Huawei GT3, it has one of the best heart rate sensors, which is what I want for workouts. Also looks pretty good (elite version) and I wear it even when not working out

yeah, i got an amazfit neo because i needed a watch and it was about as cheap as a casio, it got me into cardio, the proprietary Zepp app is kinda bad but you can use gadgetbridge and free yourself from the chinks, it also works as a ble hr sensor though many apps can't detect it (cardio trainer does and that app is good enough for me)
hr bands are way better as hr sensors, but the sensors on the cheaper chink watches are usable if you position them as high as you can on your forearm instead of on the wrist

I know Fitbit (with the activity reminders) gets an average American to walk an extra 3000 steps a day (nearly doubling their daily activity). Great gift for your obese mother.
If you want to track athletic performance and training, get a Garmin or Polar.
The Polar Vantage M1 is cheap (under $100), has the movement reminders (though Fitbit’s are better), can GPS track with open swimming, and will track your training habits over the week and show if you’re in an improvement or maintaining zone. It also uses physical buttons instead of a touch screen (so sweat doesn’t activate the watch).
I’ve never had a Garmin because they are expensive. But they are the default fitness watch for athletes. Garmin even became synonymous with sports watches for a bit there. They apparently make the best stuff on the market, if you ask people who have the money to try out all these things.
The Apple and Samsung smart watches apparently work great as well. I’ve played around with the apple one at the store, and the turn wheel water lock appeals to me. They also are able to handle open swimming as well. But they only have like a 7 hogue active GPS battery life, for the best one. The Polar Vantage M has a 30 hr active battery life, and up to 24 days on a single charge of you use low-power modes (but the low power mode loses the fitness tracking features, so I don’t think it’s worth it, and you’ll still get nearly a week off a single charge). Apple and Samsung only get 30 hours off their low battery modes.
Fossil and Timex also have smart watch technologies. Their stuff looks better, in my opinion. But they might be less functional. I like the looks Timex Ironman R300, since it looks like a smart version of the classic Casio digital watches.
You also already have a phone (and likely a smartphone). So companies are already tracking you that you don’t lose much privacy with the watch. And the activity tracking and movement reminders are nice features.
