    Can confirm. Lost only about 3 kg in 4 months as a natty beginner, but recomped like hell. Went from horribly skinnyfat to moderate muscle definiton and much broader shoulders. Ate 150g of protein per day the whole time.

    Basic thermodynamics. A system cannot accumulate mass if the energy expenditure is higher than the energy going in.
    Now the confusion might be that people REALLY overestimate the amount of calories they burn and consume. Meaning you might not need that much calories to gain mass and if most of it comes from protein then you'll build muscle no matter what.

      the body is always breaking down and recycling muscle mass, just net synthesis has to be positive is all. most protein intake doesn't even go to that, it's just an energy buffer to ensure amino acids are available 24/7 to fill that net balance.
      kcal balance is not required as raw energy is taken from fat stores at any time as well.
      it just gets harder when fat stores are near depleted, kcal balance is too extremely negative, breakdown from training/stress is too much, iow the muscle protein balance becomes negative.
