bigger muscle = more muscle fibers = higher strength potential. strength is just the ability to use use those muscle fibers by learning a skill like squatting. a beginner should always focus on building more muscle first then learn the skill once they have a base of muscle built. this is what i teach my calisthenics friends who come to me and tell me of their struggles trying to learn the planche or front lever when they've only trained for 6 months, are generally pretty shit at the basics, and look completely dyel.

They have you squatting as much as you bench and deadlifting as often as ohp. You can hit upper body every/every other day if you aren't pr chasing to the point of prioritizing ego prs instead of long term muscle building.
I agree that it's subpar, but it teaches noobs one very important thing. If you can grind squats 3x5 into the brick wall, you can grind any other lift.
As a guy in his mid 30s it must be said that SS is outdated but it is largely responsible for bringing barbells, and thus compound lifts, to the masses. It's an important piece of fitness history, but there are better routines to do instead no matter what your goal is.
