Yeah, it's disproportionately uncomfortable for the stimulus and your legs will never be the limiting factor.

Yeah, you have a squat variation that's also somewhat developing your traps and upper back isometrically. It's also specific to any sport that requires you to pick things up eg grappling and strongman

What is typically the limmiting factor in it? Is it arms/upper back? Is it a functional squat for martial arts?

            There is no limiting factor.

Huh. I used to do something similar when picking up 12' lumber and 20' rebar rods when I did construction. Never knew it had a name.

This guy trains to do meme shit. Last time I did zerchers with light-moderate weight (for my back squat) my 'cep cramped and I couldn't keep going.

Your body literally trolled you out of lifting.

Agreed. I wish I didn't have this experience because zerchers are very cool in theory.

Yes, they will. Once you get used to the grip it really doesn't hurt anymore. I do 180kg zercher shrugs and calf raises and, while being exhausting, they don't really hurt.

Can more easily get better depth than probably any variation of squat.
More load than front squats, and can get reasonably close to the same load as a back squat
Probably the safest for lower back issues unless you have some specific problem with regard to rounding your lower back.
Forces you to engage your core more as well as certain other muscles which other squat variations typically wouldn't.

        Functional strength.

Slightly less load than the back squat.
If a small arch in your lower back might cause you problems (it almost never should), then you should avoid them.
Knees are forced to splay out wide, so slightly different muscles would be engaged compared to a back or front squat.

Is there a single fit guy who actually does this as part of his routine and not a youtuber doing them because they're silly?

You just came from Zercher clean thread, now that I showed you that guy you're gonna watch all of his shit. Good on you, I did the same. Major redpills when it comes to volume, frequency, how to train for power and intensity.

Yep. The only area I think he's wrong is in core training.

Why did he say about core training that you disagree with? Was it this?

Yeah, I think that the core needs to be isolated and I'm generally averse to crunches/situp variations. I don't think heavy lifts nor carries are sufficient for building core strength, and I'd argue that if it gets to that point for someone, then his core is relatively weak (maybe strongman is an exception).
I think bodyweight exercises like hanging leg raises, hanging windshield wipers, dragon flags and the ab roller (and all of their variations) are the best for building core strength.

Bugenhagen has done zercher squat as his main lift for periods.
It seems old school soviet wrestlers used zercher deadlifts and squats and staples of their weight lifting training

I do zercher's once a week for 1 working set 5-8 reps, 2-3 warmup sets, just simple skill work
It's fun, helps with front squat, athletic position, functional

      You have 3 options
      >use elbow sleeves
      >start with light weight and slowly work your way up so your arms get used to them
      >frick it we ball
