me even though i should. im trying to lose 20 lbs. its so annoying to track every little thing. I just fast and then eat two big meals at the end of the day for ease of tracking. one after i get home and then dinner after gym. Except for weekends where I walk 30k steps for my job and I eat accordingly.
Counting calories every day is maddening. Instead, I made a mealplan that meets all my macro and vitamin needs. I eat that everyday, and therefore I know exactly what I'm taking in. If you're serious about losing lots of weight quickly, this is the way. Once you've reached your goal, you'll find you naturally eat the correct amount of food

I don’t track too meticulously, but I keep a ballpark running total in my head. But I find that as long as I avoid goyslop I never end up going very high.
This is my answer when on maintainence as well. I weigh myself every day (no I don't care about my day to day weight it's just for doing weekly averages) and if there begins a variance I don't like I get more exact about counting what I'm eating.
Otherwise I just try to avoid garbage, and build my plate protein first. Hell, I don't even cut out baked goods and stuff when doing this, I just only eat baked goods I actually made rather than the corner cutting garbage stores sell and it works out well.
I don't have any actual numbers in my head, since I also don't know my TDEE. I just have a feeling for how much I need to eat to stay at maintenance and have a running +- in my head every day. For me I've found a good weightloss method is to head to the gym before eating anything, have a huge breakfast afterwards that fills me up so much I only really eat one other meal big meal that day.

maybe 10% of people count specific calories daily. Most people who train for physique have a vague idea of how much they should be eating and how much certain food items 'cost' you but actually plugging that shit into myfitnesspal is pretty rare.
Most of them have a decent idea of their protein intake though, had 2 20gr protein thingies, a can of tuna with rice cooked in chicken broth (~35gr?) and a serving of chili con carne that shouldve had around 200gr of beef (~45gr) and a good amount of kidney beans (10gr? 15gr?) in it. probably had about 130-150 gr protons today. practically nobody on this board is big + lean enough for the full 100% tracking and insistence on 1+gr/lb to make a tangible difference though. When people actually do it its usually because theyre either fat and know they have fucked up hunger cues or know theyre slacking off big time in other areas so they try to supercompensate by doing something that is ultimately almost meaningless when you dont even 5x5 1/2/3/4

I can't do that. I have a hyperactive hunger drive and almost no satiation response. I could eat til I nearly puke and still feel hungry for up to half an hour longer. Two hours later the cycle starts again even if my stomach is still partially full. If I didn't count calories I'd be a turbofatty

I find it easier and less stressful. Once I have a rough idea of calories and sizes I just eyeball shit. If I want to bulk I just add calories in various ways like extra snacks shit like almonds or boiled eggs and maybe have double portion of meat at dinner. If I want to cut I eat no snacks and be more active walk more.
It allows flexibility for if I’m out with friends. Go to chipotle and get a burrito with no rice just double chicken meat fajita veggies beans and a sprinkle of cheese. Bulking add rice. It’s simple man.

I track in 250 increments. 250=snack, 500=small meal, 750=decent meal, 1000=very large meal, 1500+ is binge eating and drinking slopfest.

yes and no. I have like 140g of protein + my oatmeal, and fruit that's consistent across like every day. -400ish for my runs and I have about 1400 kcal to do whatever with and I just kind of ballpark it. It's not quite reckless abandon and not quite strict crazy stuff

how long do you do your runs for anyway? need to get my cardio up.
about 20 minutes with 5 minutes of walking to warm up and about 10 minutes walking home from the place I get coffee. Total is about 450 kcal. The hour long runs I used to do were around 800 but that required more recovery considerations. You can run 5k 6 days a week after 4 or 5 months of running if you're a good weight by then and have eased into that weekly mileage.

For my normal meals, I typically eat the same thing everyday. It tastes good and I'm losing weight like a mother, down over 30 since Jan 2. My meals are already in my tracker, so it's pretty fast. Not knowing the exact number of cal and protein gives me a bit of anxiety too.

Calories don't mean much; what's important is the ratio of macronutrients. 4000 calories with 150g of protein is far different from 4000 calories and 60g of protein.

you do not need to be 100% accurate. I'll give you an example.
When I cook rice I use a bit of olive oil, one garlic clove and half an onion. When I'm about to eat it I'll weigh the cooked rice I put on my plate and add that weight to myfitnesspal using "cooked rice".
The same thing happens to chicken breast. I'll use oil to cook it, I'll add salt and maybe some papryka. I'll weigh it cooked and add to myfitnesspal the same way.
Chicken tigh, the same thing. In the app there are options for boneless tigh, skinless tigh, you just weigh and add to the app.
There is another method for tracking. Let's say you are following a recipe where you add chopped potatoes, chopped carrots and pieces of meat. Obviously you won't separate bit by bit of carrot to track it. You weigh it BEFORE you chopp it. In this case, you track everything before cooking, before adding it to the recipe, and you add it as raw in the app. You'll be left with the total macros for the entire recipe, then you just use proportions to know your macros for the day.
It's not 100% accurate but it's more than close enough.
1 or 2 spoons of olive oil will not kill your diet unless you are a bodybuilder almost stage ready.
*HOWEVER*, seeing as you are probably american, just because you can neglect salt, a garlic clove, a dash of olive oil, I feel like I need to mention it, you CAN NOT neglect 1 pound of ketchup and mayonnaise you fat fucks add to your salad, or many of the other dressings with 20g of sugar added to it.
