Basically situps rely heavily on the hip flexors unless you engage your hamstrings. When you have someone or something to hold your feet down you're doing the opposite of this. Instead pull against someone or something, toward yourself, with your ankles. Let your back curl like it naturally does and situps become a complete abdominal isolation and much more difficult.
