It's kind of expensive, and I already do sailing and climbing/hiking.
It really is. I got in on the ground floor at my gym which grandfathers me into the rate at sign-up but it's still $125 a month just for membership. I don't spend much on gi's though and just stick with affordable reliable stuff like Sanabul.
>sailing
Sounds like you have enough money... and hiking is free.
Nah, the sailing club I go to is a nonprofit (Community boating). It averages $50 a month, and even then, it is a bit expensive on my wage.

you sound like a pussy

Gotta work on that delivery, sport.
getting injured and then u cant workout or do bjj really does suck
I trained through a detonated MCL and meniscus. I was back on the mats in 3 days.
I have a purple belt and my neck hurts today
Why would i do blowjob job?
I just do J. Your mum does Enough of the BJ for all of us.
Holy frick ROFL
the same reason i don't go to strip clubs
I’m more concerned about a skin condition. Cauliflower ear doesn’t look fun, either.
No one I know who has cauliflower ear thinks about it. That skin condition thing is the biggest cope I've ever heard though.
No I mean, MRSA and staph and all that stuff you can get rolling. I still hate how it looks. I want to try a few classes just to have the basics, but not interested in long term potential for disease / injury.
I love me some BJJ but it's hella expensive so unless you're trying to learn to better defend yourself I wouldn't recommend it.
The sport scene is absolutely moronic, too. Find a gym with a lot of cops, they're generally not as expensive and focused on real life instead of guard pulling.
Don't go to a nasty gym, and take a shower after you get off the mats. And for the love of God actually wash your Gis. If you're hygienic and train somewhere hygienic you won't get a skin condition, it's 100% preventable just by taking care of yourself.
To get cauliflower ear you have to get punched or kicked really hard in the head, doesn’t happen in BJJ.
My ears beg to differ
It absolutely can it is just most common in wrestling not Jiu-jitsu
Cauliflower ear is only sore for a few days. After that, its just ugly.
Judo is a way more IST sport if you aren't trying to transition to mma and don't feel like having a danaher dickrider try to rip your knee apart in shitty little Naga tourneys. Girls are better looking and less mentally ill/less penis envy/haven't been raped as well.
Why are the judo guys on here so smug? All the judo people I've met irl have been cool, but if I'm being honest judo seems pretty contrived.
its just funny shitflinging because judo is pretty much just the stand up game of bjj because regular jj is also a meme
Death rattle of a dying sport. BJJ teaches Judo takedowns too so they're just quickly getting taken in by BJJ.
My gym takes a lot of pride in their stand up, but I have seen some shitty ass stand up out of blue belts recently. It was a sad sight to see
Yeah the only time my gym has let us start seated in the last several months is when there really wasn't room to safely start standing. We typically do 10 minutes of warmup with live takedown practice though.
Iv seen those homosexuals on Instagram. There technique is worse than a orange belt Its REALLY bad.
Every month we have bjj nerds come try the Judo comps and they get fricking SMASHED
IST is a bunch of pussies that come up with 10000 copes as to why they don't train martial arts. it's impossible to have a decent martial arts thread on this website
Go start a martial arts thread or general. This one isn't a martial arts thread, it's a "my hobby is better than your hobby" thread.
I love these threads because it gives me a chance to shit on cross-posters from IST without having to go look at state department run Ukraine shilling.
>IST
I meant /k/
It’s a side hobby at best. Full of sois, people who train every day and look average at best, strength and wrestling overwhelms practitioners a lot, expensive, too many women, no one wants to do stand up properly with me.
I put most of my effort into lifting. Something that isn’t risky, has best reward for effort ratio, and it’s something I use every day (by constantly mogging). Still keep up some bjj but twice a week. It’s kind of fun if I lift hard first and try not to win through strength alone. I miss my judo gym but there’s none around now and it would have the same problems limiting lifting anyway.
>Full of sois
>strength and westling overwhelms practitioners a lot
>too many women
>no one wants to do stand up properly with me
You're at a 1 in a million gym. I guarantee you none of these things are a problem for most places.
Yeah no real gym has trouble with wrestlers.
i don't think it's THAT rare for a BJJ gym. blue/purple frequently come into my gym and get destroyed by our white belts, but my gym covers standup and wrestling.
look for a gym that also has mma or works with cops/military. my coach doesn't even allow them to pull guard.
Purple belt here. Grappling is fun and can make you a better man
because I do judo instead
BJJ people are the most delusional people on earth.
Tell me OP what would you when you have me in your guard and I start chewing your nipples, face and wiener?
I’d cum immediately
Do*
You would die LMAO
There are 3 ways to destroy a BJJ pro
1 - Be more pro than he is
2 - Be a good striker and good at defending against takedowns
3 - Have a weapon and knowing how to use it under stress
Anything you can think of, an experience grappler can do to you from superior positions at will. You're living in a movie kid.
I did mma for a decade. My body kind of hurts now so I just roll occasionally and do a lot of cardio.
Because to find a REAL BJJ class is rare. Most are LARPing as UFC fighters, totally useless in street combat. Better off learning Judo or Jap Jujitsu combined with Boxing AND Karate
I can't roll anymore. Blue belt with too many overuse injuries from powerlifting. I decided I've acquired enough muscle memory from BJJ for the rest of my life for any realistic self defense situation, and committed to lifting
Lmao moron. You don't really get to that point until maybe purple belt. The first several years of BJJ are just a necessary element that you must endure to get to the point that it actually becomes easy to hit in a street fight and that just assuming you aren't fighting a trained striker. And how did you make it all the way to blue belt without realizing that people lose their game when they're out for a long time? I was a white belt when a blue belt that hadn't trained for a year came back and I crushed him. He had 40 pounds on me.
Bjj is for dyels and gays.
Muay Thai, boxing, mma, wrestling, judo, sambo are all infinitely better than bjj at fitness and self defence.
Sambo is a meme and any BJJ gym that's worth a shit will have tons of wrestling and Judo that will have your game easily able to hang with a Sambo practitioner that's been training a similar amount of time.
>any BJJ gym that's worth a shit will have tons of wrestling and Judo
And those are good because they have wrestling and judo coaches, so just do wrestling or judo.
Because why wouldn't I want to know the slew of sweeps and submissions that BJJ knows that neither of the other two do?
>slew of sweeps and submissions that BJJ knows that neither of the other two do?
Ask me how I know you never done bjj much less judo or wrestling.
>Bro wrestling shows you EVERYTHING bro it does. Judo does butterfly sweeps all day.
>Knows absolutely nothing
Everything in bjj was stolen from judo, the Gracie's learned from a judoka.
Woah so it's derivative and therefore is a carbon copy of judo and therefore we're talking about the same thing?
>sambo
Wanna know how I know you're larping?
Not to downplay how great MT is, but any serious MT practitioner would definitely be called DYEL here because of how hard they cut in order to drop weight classes. Most serious MT fighters I see are rail thin.
Casual
I'm nearly a purple belt, lifting has to take a back seat but its worth it. BJJ is more fun.
I did. I enjoy striking more so i do muay thai now
I have a bunch of piercings like a moron and wear glasses.
Not so much that i don't want an owie, but i don't want an actual injury.
I'm working on contacts and silicone stays for the piercings before i consider it. In the mean time i'm doing cardio boxing.
There is nothing in bjj that doesn't exist in mma, wrestling, judo or sambo and all have tons of things that bjj doesn't, good standup to begin with.
>wrestling, judo or sambo
>wrestling has no way to finish the fight
>judo has limited ground game and very rarely ends a fight
>sambo is practiced in like 3 countries by inbreds
this obsession with knocking people out is starting to sound like bjj is the Black person of martial arts
People don't get knocked out in BJJ but they do in MT, kickboxing and boxing. Wtf are you talking about, casual?
He doesn't know.
Yet all superior to bjj since all bjj gyms worth anything teach wrestling, judo and/or sambo.
Funny how that works.
You have to get the fight to the mat in order to go BJJ anon... what don't you get about that?
Both wrestling and judo pin the frick out bjjcels because their atrophied muscles can't even budge them.
Wrestlers just stay on top of bjjers forever and judokas ragdoll them.
I have tapped out black belt judokas and national wrestlers, they have very few options of finishing a fight, they're great martial arts but they lack finishes
I did a little wrestling in high-school and I am just starting Jiu-jitsu. I strangled a brown belt judoka with more bjj experience. Your assumptions are faulty. Judokas slap Jitsuhomies on the feet but get subbed on the ground. Wrestlers take the fight to the ground and wrestle the frick out of the bjj guy but ultimately get subbed because they don't know any subs or sub defense.
Also
>Everything you can do in the ground is bjj even though bjj stole every single technique from other preexisting grappling styles.
Are you moronic? Sambo doesn't have chokes
Boxing is better
Because when I used to go I only learned triangles and started tearing my knee apart. Then Covid shut down the gym
Because it's gay. It's the gayest combat sport.
Butt scooters and guard pullers should be shot
Because Judo is better.
>very few ways of finishing the fight
>limited ground game
>less effective no gi
>incredibly fricked olympic ruleset
I submit a black belt Judoka in my gym on the regular and I'm a blue belt
Sure you do.
not him but I have easily submitted a 2nd degree karate black belt that was an active duty infantry marine, multiple times back to back I tapped that guy. I don't even train jiu jitsu I just love a good wrassle.
I can see that for karate because it has dogshit defense against grappling.
This guy is full of shit though. Or his black belt is letting him work. I've "tapped" black and brown belts since my first three months training by that metric.
I believe him. Some tough dogs out there bro. Lots of mean as frick poor people that can't afford a gym membership but will beat the frick out of pretty much anyone. You basically have to at least be middle class to be able to afford a gym membership, at least the majority of people this is when purchasing a membership becomes viable. What does middle class mean? It means you are a domesticated pathetic little golden retriever. There are pitbulls and rottweilers out in the streets that fight over meat.
>This guy is full of shit though. Or his black belt is letting him work. I've "tapped" black and brown belts since my first three months training by that metric.
You are delusional, I also tap the wrestling coach whenever we roll lmao
Don't project just because you fricking suck
Also bullshit but sure thing hoss
You don't understand how martial arts or fighting works, do you?
Yes and I have serious doubt that your wrestling gives you much advantage over a black belt aside from takedowns and reversals.
It doesn't??? He takes me down then I sub him on the ground, what don't you understand?!?
This black belt must be absolutely dogshit then if he can't even keep from getting subbed off of a takedown.
>subbed off a take down
BJJ DOESNT STOP WHEN THERES A TAKEDOWN
>HE TAKES ME DOWN
>WE ROLL AND I SUB HIM FROM A REVERSAL, SWEEP OR OFF MY BACK
AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS OR ARE YOU A moron?!
Lol why would I lie about that?
Butthurt Judoka detected
>I scoot on my butt towards the black belt judoka and he's not allowed to throw me or hit me, then I beat him
>NOOOOO YOU HAVE TO PLAY BY THE INCREDIBLY SPECIFIC RULES OF MY NICHE MARTIAL ART OR IT DOESNT COUNT WHEN YOU CHOKE ME UNCONSCIOUS
Kys casual
Said the guy that needs the specific rules to not be useless
>we engage in a grappling match (MUST be gi)
>he takes me down because he's a bb in Judo
>I choke him unconscious
>NO BUT MUH JUDO IS SUPERIOR BECAUSE I CAN PUT A GUY ON HIS BACK FOR 1 SECOND
Kys casual
Meanwhile at my Judo gym we were taught to throw people from behind either by back to back throw or tripping them. McDojo's strike again. Even then whats preventing you from getting struck lmao, its the number one rule of any martial art you larping Black person
>be me, lanklet but grew up wrestling in the backyard with friends
>younger brother(were both grown men) is hanging out with me
>hes probably twice my strength and very stout
>we decide to wrestle
>I figure he'll throw me around easily
>wrong
>I tap him out any way I want whenever I want multiple times
>Hes extremely butthurt
Turns out he has zero fricking coordination but a lot of muscle. Lmao. Parents had a divorce, we grew up separately, I guess only one of us learned how to fricking fight LOL.
>Are you scared your big muscly body will get an owie?
Personally, I'm just not into rubbing wieners with other dudes
bjj rhymes with gay
>BJJ beating Judoka
Even bigger lmao right here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masahiko_Kimura_vs._H%C3%A9lio_Gracie
>He also offered Gracie a rematch in Japan, but the offer met no answer.
>no answer
judo is better
BJJ is useless in the real world when there is no rules.
most martial arts are but you have better awareness and odds
Proper Gracie jiu jitsu has no rules either, to be fair. The only metric for whether or not you win or lose is if someone taps out from being put in a submission hold of some kind, or if they get knocked unconscious. No points, no time limit, no referee decisions. It's a lot closer to the "real world" than most other martial arts. The whole reason why the Gracies divorced themselves from most tournament bodies was because they were tired of all the rules.
Im pretty sure you cant bite a chunk out of someones arm, poke their eyes out and stomp on their head with boots in "Poopoo peepee jitsu" or whatever the frick you said.
>DAR ARE NO RULS IN DA STREET!
>NOOO YOU CAN TAKE SOME ONE SOWN AND CHOKE THEM OUT! THATS AGAINS THE RULES!
moron.
I got to purple belt and then blew my knee out wrestling. Had to get surgery and be on crutches for a while. Decided it wasn't worth it.
Personally, I prefer Bas Rutten's Self Defense.
I fricking love this so much
>you will never be a 12 year old browsing youtube and think this is legit again
because i like standup alot more and many bjjbros either arent that good at it or dont want to train it with me, otherwise i love it because of how good they are on the ground, destroying me even if i get top position. id go if i had a gym close to me that wasnt too expensive, but with school and all ill stick to the uni judo club, might join the uni bjj club if theyre running this year.
Based humble bro
Most people ITT don't have the balls to cross train
Because I'd cum immediately
>Are you scared your big muscly body will get an owie?
Yeah.
I'm from Brazil, in every corner of my city there's a gym where the owner is an BJJ world champion, where everytime there's UFC athetles going in and out, it's at least a fun thing, should i try?
Absolutely. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
The biggest problem of all, what gym to choose, literally every gym is from one big shot in this industry.
>Mario Reis BJJ (created Nicholas Meregali and is the biggest coach in the south region of Brazil)
>Atos Guetho BJJ (one of the founder with Andre Galvao teach there)
>Mario Sperry Bjj (PRIDE former athlete, two times ADCC champion)
And the list goes on with everyone of the list having at least made into UFC, ADCC or became a world champion.
Any of them will be great. It should pretty much just come down to your schedule and theirs
Ok, i will be an world champion in some years from now and make IST proud.
THE CHAMPION OF IST IN THE MAKING BOYS.
Apart from living in Brazil, I am jealous of you
If every gym owner being a world champion doesn't tell you anything about how legit any of those gyms are, idk what else to tell you but classic monkey IQ.
lmao theres a gym 3 miles from my house with a world champion LOL "Helio Soneca"
They all get neck injuries then neck or back surgery
It’s for closet homosexuals. I’ll knock out these fools with one punch. Royce Gracie was a fraud.
No, but after knowing a guy who became paralyzed from a BJJ related injury, I figure that since I don't plan to ever bother getting into a fight again, I'll just keep with lifting and not waste my time on other shit.
>oh you do BJJ? *Squeezes your balls*
>*cums*
>Oh! So you train as well haha?
Judo has ne-waza which is, when properly taught, more than enough to outperform the average bjj'er
Combat sports are gay that's why.
Weird way to say you love combat sports but ok.
They are the only actual sport there is. All other "sports" are just games.
Yeah and sportsball is fun to play because of that fact.
Construction work is the only sport there is, all other sports are just larping.
judo mogs. bjj also attracts a lot of redditor joe rogan type dyels
Brown belt training since 2010. Don’t care about competition or self defense. Just train to train.
Used to compete a little in powerlifting but got really bored with it. Nothing major like 1200 raw total in 198s. BJJ has been much more fun and interesting. Still lift a little and lots of body weight stuff.
>Are you scared your big muscly body will get an owie?
Yes. I need to use my body for work. I did BJJ years ago and we were doing single leg take down defence/takedowns and when it was my turn to defend I was hoping on one foot for like a minute while this guy tried to take me down and he yanked me while I was mid air hoping and I landed on my foot the wrong way and couldn’t walk on it for a week. Thought I broke it but i didn’t. Shit was moronic. I’d rather do a real martial art like boxing, at least you can’t accidentally destroy your feet hitting pads and doing light sparring
Enjoy your monkeypox
Unironically yes. I'm worried about some spaz cranking me too hard because I'm extremely inflexible and ang injuries would keep me from training my main squeeze muay thai.
It does seem like an incredible sport and skill though, once I have a bit more time I'd love to give it a shot.
Its not hard to avoid spaz's. Just awkward. But if you have balls just say no to any white belt who wants to roll
any exercises to strengthen the muscles around knees so that my knee doesnt pop out from rotating movements? I have loose ligaments.
>checked dub dubs
based shigurui poster
Look up tai chi sloooooowwww squats and do high rep air squats, 200-500 at a time. Mix up your cadence/speed, etc. to keep from getting stale. Your knees in no time will be indestructible.
SO.
the reason Judo mogs BJJ is against normies, having good stand-up makes you a Demi-god and the limited ground game is only if you have a shit club who doesn't train it at least 20% of the time. EVEN STILL your ground game will fricking demolish them. The grand point isnt about fighting other martial artists generally speaking but some drunk guy who wants to punch you.
Id rather have god standing technique and decent ground work than dogshit standing and godlike ground work.
I'm about to try out MMA for the first time. I'm also thinking about quitting my gym if this turns out to be fun
