When people start a deficit initially they will lose several pounds in the first 1-2 weeks because of these 2 things but they get discouraged once they actually start burning fat because fat loss is a lot slower than this.

This is incorrect. Your body is constantly burning a mixture of fat and sugar for energy. The ratio varies according to your circadian rhythm, your diet, your physical activity, etc.
In a clinically fasted state, low intensity aerobic exercise like walking is almost all beta oxidation of fatty acids.
