I'm going up in weight rn and my other lifts are progressing, even my OHP is progressing in the 5-8 rep range. But my 1RM is not fricking moving man, gonna try again in a week or so.
Godspeed, going heavy on OHP is the most difficult lift (at least strict). Feel like I'm gonna pop every blood vessel in my head when I max out.
try training some sub-maximal singles, 1RM strength is a skill so you need to practice it

Focus on medium to close grip bench and do OHP afterwards. Changed everything for me personally.

Which begs the question; why can I only do heavy OHP's from a powerclean?
I STRUGGLED so hard doing OHP from the rack at 40kg and it felt like my back was going to snap. But from a clean, 40kg is literally nothing and it's strict.

You reckon momentum is helping me move more weight? I clean the weight to my collarbones and my lifts are pretty strict one after the other. Not just for the first lift after the powerclean.
I’m also stronger from a power clean, to the point where the power clean became the limit on my OHP. Couldn’t power clean more than 90 cleanly enough to press from a good position.
I think it’s a couple reasons. One is that cleaning it first makes you press very explosively. The second is that it puts you in very strong position to press from i.e balance wise, chest and elbow position and the right amount of spinal extension.
I found you can kind of get the same effect out of a rack by ‘popping it’ off your shoulders and catching it again, THEN doing the overhead press. Just seems to line everything up perfectly. If I'm not mistaken, military press is just ohp with your feet touching.
