However I do agree that squats and deadlifts likely fucked up his back a lot more than situps. Unless they were weighted - which I doubt they shouldn't have been that difficult for a man after years of training that they could actually cause a problem. And it's not like he's been doing them for decades and stopped a few years ago, this exercise was falling out of favour by the mid 90s, shit doesn't add up.
Heavy deadlifts and squats are great to do once in a while or while building muscle, terrible to do 2-3 times a week for decades.
I'd like to see him do situps, or at least how he used to do them.

classic situps only contract hip flexors anyway, the abs are static thru most of the rom. It's a meme boomer exercice. Crunches are much better for abs but people don't do them because retards think you're failing to do a situp. ALso L sits and planks.

They saw that after thousands of flex and extensions that the spines broke. This doing sit-ups is bad for your spine since you flex your spine to do a sit up.

there are a lot of much better exercises for spine health than sittups and deadlifts. if you want abs that are super strong, do hollow holds, they dont compress your vertebra or engage other unnecessary muscles

Leg raises are good but they engage your hip flexors and arms (if youre hanging). So again, its engaging other muscles and will take some of the focus off your abs.
low weight high rep RDLs are very good, also bent over rows. With the RDLs you aren't looking to work your glutes, you're just bending over keeping a straight spine and engaging all those paraspinals and doing them slow.
Foundation 8 point plank is also really good for the back. Flutter / scissor kicks are also really good to do with the hollow hold position, much better than leg raises because it doesnt torque your back as much.
Furniture sliders are much better than ab rollers and much more versatile
