Not the guy you asked but I personally quit after the amount of booze I was drinking started causing me intense depression during recovery periods and intense social anxiety / panic attacks, when my brain's serotonin / dopamine would be out of whack

After an extreme binge, I'd need about 9-10 days for my brain to regenerate and to be able to be productive / go out again (Ironically, when I felt good again, i'd get smashed again, ad infinitum)

So I decided to quit. I wish I could keep drinking, but for some reason, my neuro transmitters got completely burnt out. I miss being 19 and being able to get destroyed and feel fine in a day

My last ultra binge, I reached suicidal level depression for about 9 days. That's when I realized it's either quit now or destroy my fucking life

Keep in mind this was the result of being a weekend warrior, something people think is absolutely normal and won't damage your brain

here), I think it might also be very much person dependent. Some people can drink a ton their whole lives without developing mental hangovers like this. I used to get drunk pretty much every Friday back in the first 2.5 years of high school, I don't really remember any actual hangovers from that time, except near the end where I remember thinking to myself "this is horrible, I don't get anything out of this I want to stop" as I was going home from a party drunk.
Then I took acid once and ever since then something always just felt wrong or off after drinking during the hangovers, and the feeling kept on getting more and more sinister and intense. Anyway I'm thankful to have had the option to realize how horrible of a drug it is, just sucks that it's nigh impossible to find evening social activities to partake in that aren't just everyone drinking (at least in uni as far as I'm aware).

I mean it's fun, I'm not coping that it's not great - some of the best and most memorable parties of my life have been on booze, however it poisons your entire body so much that it's just not sustainable unless you're prepared to wrestle with the worsening side effects

Not to mention if you're genetically prone to alcoholism (like me) where alcohol makes you feel euphoric and acts like a stimulant.... Basically creeps up to you where you end up getting sloshed on every single business dinner (and they happen often once you're a bit older)

The gripe i always had with booze is how socially acceptable it is to be an alcoholic, as a matter of fact in some business circles it's expected for some reason

That's lightweight, boy. In my peak I was drinking a handle every two days, minimum. I started the morning with a pint of whiskey and did shots throughout the day. Did this for five years. For me it was when my girlfriend left me. I drank a whole bottle the same night she left, and after that I just continued drinking. I work from home and kept it down during the busy hours in the morning when there was a chance of getting a call or having a meeting, and even then I went sloshed to some meetings.
My routine the first month and a half was dream about her, wake up, remember that she is gone, make a coffee and mix it with cinnamon, caramel and liquour, take a shower, drink a shot, connect and make another coffee like that every few hours. At lunch have a glass of whiskey or three with some dried meat and hard cheese, then another special coffee. After work I would watch movies or do anything to distract myself while refilling a never ending glass of whiskey until I either passed out, finished the bottle or friends came bringing beer.
          Rinse and repeat.
I drank so much that even tho I only ate like 400-600 cal of food a day I still gained a few kg.
The scariest part is that after some time I wasn't even so sad at first when I woke up but I obsessively thought about her only to "see if I was sad or not" which translated to alcoholic language was finding a reason to drink at 7am.
Luckily I have a family history of alcoholism so I am aware of the dangers and managed to break the habit, but I could see how it could have gotten MUCH worse. After two weeks of this I was already driving around town to go buy more booze and did not care about the consequences, and besides that time I have always had the "not a single drop when driving" rule. It's so insidious that you don't even notice how much your character changes until it's too late.

      >I have measured acute inflammatory biomarkers like CRP and TNFa 2 hours after a PUFA rich meal. The rise is uncomparable to anything else I have consumed, including alcohol. Some people will say alcohol suppresses inflammation but that's only for the first 24 hours. After that it bounces back with a vengeance. So, based on my N=1 tests PUFA is way more inflammatory than alcohol, which is also a TLR4 agonist so it is nothing to laugh at.

yea I currently am still sitting at 10+ shots a day. I know I need to stop. cold turkey would be the easiest for me because once I have one drink its very hard to stop myself from having more.
I rarely get drunk, I keep a nice soft buzz going all day and then get tipsy at night.
I'm worried about getting fucked by withdrawal by going cold turkey. Any anons here have success with the weening method?

That's bad but it isn't terrible.

First drink 10 for a day then drink 2 fewer every day and you should be almost normal when you get down to 2. I'd keep it at 1/2 for a couple days after that then quit and only drink if you have any withdrawal symptoms.

I was drinking way too much for too long because of the DT fear.

As long as the liver has 25% working liver remaining it can rebuild itself. One of (only?) human organ that can do that.

I'm in my final semester in college. I remember drinking whenever I possibly could the first couple of semesters because GOOD parties happened relatively rarely, so it was kind of a "go nuts while you can" situation that was pretty innocuous.

When I turned 21, however, it got more difficult, because everyone could go to the bars. This means that you can have something to do basically every single night, which I took full advantage of. It got to the point where I was drinking to do something up to 4-5 days a week (can't miss Thursday, Friday, or Saturdays of course!)

It's a difficult situation. Now I have a dependence on alcohol for any sort of social stimulation. It's gotten to the point where I regular a bar so often every bartender knows my name, and I eat there and spend the day there.

The bright side is that its getting very old. All the girls in my grade either have boyfriends or me or some friend have run through them, so now its a lot of dead ends. I'm getting too old to hit on late juniors, etc.

So I'm starting to become more at peace with staying in or keeping it light for the night. I cannot wait until I graduate and can just focus on my career, fitness, eating correctly, etc.

I quite alchoholism. I have one now and then. Alchohol helped me forget that I expected to be bullied in any interaction I engaged in. Maturing, and time, helped me learn to ignore that anxiety, and then later use it as an indicator rather than have it use me. As a result, the alchohol isn't needed anymore. Drinking is still a fun thing to do, but there are much funner activities and imbiberies (sp?) which are much healthier and far less destructive.

I have so much more energy and im late 30s, than i ever had from ... 18-34 (that's the demo, yeah?).

So I have this going for me, which is nice. Liver probably looks like an overdone steak at this point though. Really optimistic about genetic medicine helping turn back the clock on that, sooner or later. Even considering switching engineering to bio because i have a mild sense of urgency about it.

I digress. For those who want to quit or cutback, i believe in you. I've managed it. If i can, you can. I'm a fucking emotional moron, full disclosure. If you don't think you can do it then suck it up and think more highly of yourself.

Americans have a lot less fun shit than you to do at home.

When you live in the middle of the country and the only thing to do is watch tv or drive a four wheeler or whatever the fuck because you live in buttfuck nowhere midwest state and your town pop is 1000, you can bet a lot of people turn to drinking for fun.

Imagine its the weekend, you're a factory worker and its mid winter and you're looking for something fun to do, you step outside and theres nothing but empty fields for a couple miles, to get anywhere you have to drive of course and its all cold and depressing so you drive to your buddies house where you and your friends just get shitfaced around a bonfire or you go to some shitty bar and have some had pour you drinks all night. At least you aren't into heroin like your buddie's older brother tho.

Meanwhile you live in euro and you can go walk around town, get nice food at some of the restaurants, maybe stop in the beer garden for a brew or two to treat yourself. at the end of the day if you get bored you can just walk around and see people you know or like oh im bored this weekend lets go skiing or lets go to other country x and visit cool castle y etc etc

Its probably the same reason why so many russians have shitty lifestyles. theres just jack shit to do

Haven’t drank since July 1, 2021. I was an addict and alcoholic for like a decade. Everything is so much better. I’m fit, making great money and the attention I get is insane. Me and this girl from work went to get dinner after work Saturday and I almost caved and got a drink. We talked for about 3 hours and idk she didn’t push it and stuff. We kinda talked about me possibly having one at some point and not drinking alone. Only with her basically. Idk I literally would wake up with the bottle next to me. I went to a meeting tonight and it didn’t help. I just want to get it over with so we can both get this thing going. We have such a vibe but idk what to do bros. She has a bf but it’s new and we just kinda met in the last three months since I started a new job. I’ve never met anyone that I vibe with like her. Idk what to do though. I just wanna get this relapse over with.

I like having a few drinks on Friday nights, sometimes Saturday nights.
I’ve always had trouble being social and fun to be around but alcohol makes me the person I want to be. I don’t think too much, I feel happy, I can talk to girls, and a bunch of other benefits.
The next day I don’t feel too bad because I drank water and didn’t go overboard with the alcohol.
Is this really that bad for me? I exercise hard, work, and study during the week but on the weekends I like to drink at night.

this is so true but so many people think drinking water whilst getting fucked up sobers you up when in fact all it does is keep you hydrated, bros need to look it up

Everything I read says that water doesn’t sober you up, but damn it really feels like it does. I try to drink 1 16 oz water bottle per 2 drinks then drink as much water as possible before I sleep.

I'm 30 and have drank every single day for past 2 years or so.

4 days per week: 12 units
3 days per week: 20 units (weekends)

I don't get hangovers and it has no impact to my job or life. I dirnk high quality vodka, beer and wine.

The only thing is, I'm genuinely not sure if this is considered a dangerous level of drinking or not? I'm otherwise in good shape and I eat good meals and maintain a calorie target of 2-2.5k per day.

I really don't want to be developing a scarred liver though.... I realise the 'recommended' limit is 14 units per week but I've always thought that figure was a bit ridiculous for most people, expecially healthy males.

That's terrible and no matter how healthy you feel it's goign to lead to cirrhosis and all kinds of nasty shit. At least add milk thistle supplement to reduce some of the liver damage (according to what I read).

Yes i was planning on buying some milk thistle supplements too. I also heard it helps, although the scientific evidence is not conculsive.

I only really drink to get a buzz. I don't enjoy being dizzy drunk. I just drink to relax and then i go to sleep. Cutting back is useless therefore. So i either abstain completely or continue as i am.

I knew a dude who could have one weekend without vodka.
I hate the hangover, so it was never a problem with me but I can see how this drinking pattern can begin.

I smoked so much, for 6 uears and after 10 months I feel my right lung hard like rubber.
Sometimes I feel as if someone splashed cold water over my right torax side.

I am a bit scared but when I go days without any of these strange sensations I found myself wishing a smoke for some seconds

I need to try and quit again. This shit is getting so old. Usually drink 4 pints of strong beer and 2 shooters of liquor a night and then a bottle of vodka or a 12 pack of strong beer over the weekend. I know I won’t have withdrawals beyond some sleeplessness and night swears but goddamn I love how it feels. It’s totally ruined my life. I went from party animal/pulling chicks at 19 to sitting in my apartment drinking every night alone at 33.
