If you're just starting out, remember your demand will go up a lot as you lift and keep lifting, don't limit your calories too much at the same time as you start lifting or you'll be very tired and feel like shit. In fact, improve the quality of your meals, but consider also raising the quantity. Once you've gotten a good grasp of training and diet, losing fat will be no problem.
drinking your calories is fine if it's milk because milk will give you protein, fat, carbs and a lot of micronutrients. It's basically a liquid food. But soda and stuff like that? I wouldn't touch it on a cut

Part of my making it strategy is drinking 2 litres of milk a day.
