Large commercial vegetable operations are literally the worst agricultural practice we do in terms of damaging nature.
I guess you might say I'm a bit of a conservationist (not the homosexual kind though) and it really posters me how these people actually believe that a beef cow operation is worse the environment than let's say, a tomato operation kek.

Anyone who actually lives around agriculture for five minutes knows it's worse. So in the case of something like tomatoes:

Vegetable operations are literally the worst thing you can do to the land. If you took a cow pasture and decided "hey I want to turn this back into natural hardwoods" it would take some time (careful forestry practices) but it would be completely possible. I would put it to you that it would be almost impossible to rehabilitate a field that had been used for something like tomatoes for an extended period of time. The soil profil would be permanently changed, the runoff situation would permanently change the soil alone without the effects of crops themselves. Conservative estimate to get that type of land back to old hardwood- like 500-1000 years.

After a considerable time with soil degradation in order to get the same profile of hardwoods you are going to have to totally rebuild that soil profile. So take a place where let's say the deciduous trees are long-livedto maturity (like 300 years for a live oak for example). In order to even start to rebuild that soil profile it will take successive generations of the old hardwoods dropping leaves etc. dying off, clearing uunderstory etc. So yeah 1000 years is a conservative estimate.
In all honesty, after that long of basically destroying the soil, you will honestly NEVER get back what you lost. Maybe with alot of time and effort you could get close though. You stupid fricks say you live nature but you have zero interest or understanding of just how fine an equilibrium any given locale and the species species make up an ecosystem actually are. Extremely refined balanced complicated systems and if you just totally rape the soil for decades- good fricking luck building it back how it was. I mean he'll you can go three miles away from one stand of hardwoods and depending on minor factors see a totally different vegetative ecosystem because of very small differences in things like soil etc. You will never be able to rebuild all that variety once you have fricked it and if you can it will take an extremely long time.

Well first of all moron that soil profile was probably built over a long history of volcanic activity in the first place kek. In that locale that is exactly the type of event that established much of the look of the forests there to begin with.
Also I don't know the details on that region but I seriously don't think you are grasping how badly an intensive crop like tomatoes rapes the soil in a totally unnatural way. Let's say you had a 400 acre tomato operation for 50 years- that 400 acres would have a completely different soil profile than you started with.
I would presume the forest at some place like Mt. St. Helens was originally created by a very particular set of circumstances including large volcanic events. Hell the soil profile was even determined by vegetation which grew prior to the end of the ice age (the new species that settled after the ice age were determined why what kind of soil had been manufactured by nature prior to the ice age).
The whole thing is a very finely balanced system that depends on 1000000 vicissitudes over thousands of years of natural history. It cannot be replicated.
And by way of further explanation through a hypothetical specific example, let's say you had a piece of land that was a somewhat rare ecosystem these days in the southern US- specifically let's say you were dealing with a deciduous stand of native magnolia, swamp chestnust oak, white oak, some longleaf pine, etc. (That is a very particular and finely balanced ecosystem of hardwoods). The soil and nature of water drainage and runoff determines alot of it. After clearing that stand and raping the soil for 50+ years, if you just didn't replant the soil and let nature reclaim it- the first thing that would happen is that native fast growers would immediately populate the area (sweet gum primarily) plus invasive fast growers like laurel and privet. There would be no opportunity for the old hardwoods to establish because of the fast growers like sweet gum would just fill the void on the previously clear cut land. Then even more problematic is that the soil profile that allowed that magnolia/oak/beech/ash based ecosystem would have to be rebuilt- which I would argue is impossible on a large scale. If you clear cut the land, kept the soil mostly intact (like in a cow pasture) and then went in and removed with good forestry practices the invasive and native fast growers (like sweet gum) you could theoretically make headway rebuilding the old forest.
But if the soil profile is wrecked - that ecosystem is likely gone forever or for at least thousands of years thanks to the soil degradation and run off alone. Even if you policed the fast growers like sweet gum, you'd still not be able able rebuild that topsoil profile and drainage pattern.
