Potatoes I think you can make taste better just by themselves or with a little cooking but rice usually needs to be paired with something. I can't do plain white rice like asians.

I can't make boiled potatoes without wanting to turn it into potato soup; baked potatoes are boring unless you're roasting those little ones. anything involving pan frying is a pain in the ass because you have to microwave them first on a low setting and then fry; I always frick up and don't microwave for long enough, so they're not fully done even though the home fries look perfectly browned on the outside.

I like parboiled rice. Nutritionally similar to brown rice, but cooks quickly. That said, I live in Idaho, I gotta go with the spuds, they're so cheap here it's unreal.
