During the 2000s and early 2010's abs was the 1 thing everyone trained, even if they didn't actually lift or do anything else
All the most popular fitness YT videos were "how to get abs in 30 minutes at home" and now no one trains them

People realized that abs are made in the kitchen, and the idea of spot treating fat got debunked. Go on a diet and do weighted crunches, that's the only ab advice anyone with the slightest credibility will give.

Long term body fat is more determined by muscle mass and activity, because muscles continue to consume calories up to 36 hours after activity.
So you cannot judge total caloric consumption by just the activity of a single workout.

I fell for the "barbell compounds are enough for abs" meme for far too long. I have ok, visible abs but they are underdeveloped relative to the rest of me because of skipping abs. Now I just add in in a few sets of ab roller or leg raises in every workout.
Same reason dyels dont train obliques. They think they will become "too bulky" and ruin their aesthetics. Zoomer coworkers starve themselves and are low body fat with no abs and im 27% bf with visible abs because i almost maxed out the abs machines at my gym. so what are the best ab exercises?
Sit ups and leg raises, both come in various forms. They also cause back pain, but the cure for that is to do elevated back extensions to strengthen your lower back muscles and, as they say, “unfrick your spine”. Every time I get a pump there, it feels like I’m wearing a personal lumbar support and it’s so cooomfy!
Swiss ball pot stirrers are good. You can vary the intensity by changing body position, so newbie or advanced both benefit. Natural carry over to ab wheel.

powerlifters are one group that actually trains their abs since they need it for their lifts, I think everyone got over the squats and deadlifts are all you need for core quickly but they did hold on to the compounds are all you need to grow for. Le bang for your buck.
All you need for ab workouts is a plank variation and a compression variation.
